Member Highlight: Khaliq Phelps
Khaliq Phelps (Local 231- Pewaukee, WI) is a rising force in Milwaukee’s construction scene and a proud member of the North Central States Regional Council of Carpenters (NCSRCC).
Khaliq got his start with JCP Construction as a youth apprentice. Through the youth apprenticeship program, Khaliq had the opportunity to work on some incredible projects including the Wisconsin Center District, a huge complex with three unique venues in one area in Downtown Milwaukee.
In May 2025, Khaliq graduated from high school and now works full-time in the field with JCP Construction as a full-fledge apprentice, continuing to advance his career as a professional carpenter. What sets him apart is not just his skill, it is his hustle and his drive.
He overcame a fear of heights to work confidently from lifts, practices patience and precision on site, and consistently steps up when it matters most. From exploring welding to tackling high-profile access flooring installs, Khaliq shows dedication to mastering his craft every day.
His next goals include earning a welding certification, obtaining his Commercial Driver’s License, and eventually starting his own business.
Outside of the job site, Khaliq is a car enthusiast and a self-made music creator. He draws inspiration from his older brother, who motivates Khaliq to keep pushing forward in all he does.
Khaliq’s message to any future apprentices is short but impactful. “There’s more safety, structure, and support in the trades than you might expect. Don’t be afraid to get started.”
A special thanks to Mike Snow (Local 231 – Pewaukee WI), General Superintendent and Manpower Coordinator at JCP Construction, for the member highlight submission.
