Career Connections Graduate Returns to Help Build New Tech Buildings

June 16, 2019

Cole Abt of Local 310 graduated from DC Everest High School in Schofield, WI after spending two years on his youth apprenticeship. DC Everest High School is a Career Connections school that provides curriculum from the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and gives graduating students a head start on their career in one of the construction fields. Abt initially signed with a non-union contractor right out of high school. Now, Abt has changed employers to a union contractor, Findorff, where he works as a registered apprentice. “A union job provides me with better wages, better training and much better benefits”, said Abt. While working at Findorff, Abt has been given the unique opportunity to work on the expansion and renovation of the new “Tech Ed” department in the high school he graduated from.

With 20 students graduating from Abt’s 2017 class in high school, the program is expected to continue growing. Aaron Hoffman, Abt’s Tech Ed teacher, stated, “students who are considering a career in the trades should consider the Career Connections program. It’s a fun and exciting way for kids to begin learning necessary skills and explore opportunities in the trades.” Both of Hoffman’s children are planning to go through the Career Connections program in the near future.
