Brian Holdeman (Local 106 – Des Moines, IA) has built an impressive career in construction, thanks in large part to the training, opportunities, and stability provided by the Carpenters Union. Since joining the union in 2017, Brian has not only developed a passion for construction but has also recognized the immense value the union brings to its members—offering benefits, competitive pay, and an unwavering commitment to safety.

Starting as an apprentice, Brian worked diligently to rise through the ranks. His dedication to learning and improving his skills through union training gave him the essential qualifications to excel in the field. One impactful training he completed was Infection Control Risk Assessment (ICRA). Brian was among the first groups to go through this program, and the training he received has helped elevate his career, especially with two major hospitals in his area requiring ICRA trained professionals on current facility work.

"The ICRA training is really taking off and being utilized," Brian explained. "It made me more desirable for the role I have now. The union trainings really helped everything fall into place."

Throughout his career, Brian gained extensive experience in doors, hardware, and trim work—skills he brings to the job site. His hard work and commitment led him to a foreman position, where he was responsible for overseeing projects and ensuring successful execution.

One of Brian’s most memorable projects was leading exterior finishes at the Des Moines International Airport. The job involved installing large, heavy concrete panels 40 feet in the air, which posed significant logistical and safety challenges. To address this, Brian designed and developed a custom cradle system to securely clamp and lift the panels using a lull. He collaborated with a local company in Des Moines to create 3D renderings of the system, then worked with structural engineers to ensure the design met all safety regulations.

Brian’s expertise and dedication in his work did not go unnoticed. In the last week of February 2025, he took on a new role as a Field Superintendent with Graham Construction. His union training and experience made him a strong candidate for this position, where he will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of job sites.

"It’s less physical than what I was doing before and it was time to drop my bags," Brian stated"I’m excited and I think it’ll be a great fit."

Before transitioning to Graham Construction, Brian ensured a smooth handover at his former company, First Interiors. He remained committed to wrapping up the crane system project for the DSM Airport, completing necessary training and implementing the new tools before moving on.

"I wasn’t going to bail on them. I made sure the whole process was taken care of so that no one was left in the dust," Brian said. His approach to leadership and accountability earned the respect and full support of both companies during his transition.

Reflecting on his journey, Brian credits Carpenters Local 106 and the Carpenters Union for providing stability, job security, and continuous growth opportunities. "With the union, we don’t have to worry about where our paycheck is coming from. If one contractor slows down, we have the ability to move around and stay working. I am where I am because of the union and because of my local," Brian proudly stated.
