Joe Mahan (Local 587 – Sioux Falls, SD) is not only a standout apprentice but a respected executive board member whose dedication and work ethic have earned him high praise from members of his local. Since his start with signatory contractor McCarthy Companies in June 2021, Joe has made substantial strides in his career and has quickly established himself as a leader and a mentor on the job site.

For Joe, becoming a union carpenter was more than just a career choice—it was a lifelong goal inspired by his father, who is also a union carpenter. “Looking up to him, I’ve wanted to be a union carpenter for as long as I can remember,” Joe shared. That early admiration has fueled his commitment to the trade and to the union.

Joe speaks highly of the apprenticeship program that shaped his development. “I’ve found all that I’ve learned in the apprenticeship to be valuable. Between learning from great instructors at the training center and experienced journeymen on the job, I’ve learned a lot of great skills I use every day.” This hands-on education and mentorship have not only helped him grow technically but also prepared him to guide others.

In January, Joe was made a foreman on a project, a challenge he felt not only prepared to take on but one that he has really enjoyed. “It’s been a great experience getting to show some of the newer carpenters coming in and helping them find their footing,” Joe said. As foreman, a typical day for him consists of setting concrete forms and laying out tasks for members on the crew. Apprentices do not often get the chance to be a foreman on a job site and this opportunity was a testament to Joe’s work ethic and skill as a newer carpenter.

Joe is passionate about encouraging others to join the trade. “I would absolutely recommend the apprenticeship to others. It is an incredible opportunity to learn more skills than you can pick up from just the job site,” Joe boasted. “For someone graduating from high school or someone looking to enter the trades, this is an incredible opportunity with great pay and benefits.”

For Joe, the meaning of being a union carpenter goes beyond the job itself. “It means that you have a great support system with the brotherhood and sisterhood standing with you,” he shared.

With his dedication, leadership, and deep-rooted passion for the trade, Joe Mahan exemplifies the qualities of a union carpenter. He’s not just building structures—he’s building his own legacy.
