Nathan Voge (Local 161 – Kenosha, WI) decided he wanted to be a carpenter when he was 14 years old. Today, he is honing his craft at Riley Construction, where his journey began five years ago with a Career Signing Day. Reflecting on that milestone, Nathan emphasizes the pivotal role the Carpenter apprenticeship program played in shaping his career.
Nathan started his apprenticeship in 2019 and found that he really enjoyed building structures and foundations. He knew that this was what he was meant to do. “My favorite part about the apprenticeship was learning about the vast opportunities that being a union carpenter has to offer,” Nathan shared. Nathan has learned various life skills that make him a valuable member of his company and team.
When he completed the apprenticeship program in 2023, one of the most valuable things that he learned was how to work together with a team or the crew on every project; that each member of that team has a purpose and a skill set that is important. “I would recommend this apprenticeship to anyone that is looking for a hands-on career that enjoys the satisfaction of building,” Nathan said.

Since Nathan knew what he wanted to do from a very young age, he has enjoyed every phase of being a young carpenter. For those who are not sure what they want to pursue, Nathan says, “I would tell any high school student that doesn’t want to attend a 4-year college, no matter the reason, that a carpentry apprenticeship is a great alternative. It is a good paying career that is very rewarding.”
To Nathan, being a union carpenter means receiving good pay and great benefits that allow members to retire comfortably. “It also means that you have a whole network of people that support you in any way they can.”
